Legacies had the foundations and background to be great – but it felt like the writers didn’t care as much as the cast did. It just missed the mark for many fans. With its blend of supernatural drama and teen angst, ‘Legacies’ had the potential to be a standout series, but it struggled to fully deliver on that promise. From reimagining key storylines to suggesting character arcs and plot twists that could have revitalized the series, I’ll explore the changes that could have given ‘Legacies’ the fair shot it deserved.
What Was The Show’s Main Downfall?

First and foremost, the biggest downfall wasn’t the dialogue – it was Malivore’s storyline being over three seasons long. He wasn’t killed until the fourth episode of season four; then, we skipped through two more story arcs in the last 16 episodes.
After having watched it, I realized that it’s quite obvious that the writers stopped caring and planning out the future of the show in the middle of season two. That said, some episodes in seasons three and four were just amazing.
Going off that point, we had books the original Vampire Diaries show was loosely based on – if we were going somewhat back to those roots with the new supernatural creatures, why didn’t we bring in creatures and inspiration from the book’s storylines?

Where Were Its Strengths?

The main cast of teens was by far the show’s biggest strength. I remember watching the interviews and sneak peeks from the cast when the show was first starting, and it was obvious they all cared about what they were making. Especially Kaylee – that girl is a Vampire Diaries genius.
I also think the main storyline at times was strong, as well as a handful of side stories, but the biggest strength was Hope’s struggle with fully becoming the tribrid. That was a very short storyline that should have had its whole season. But the few episodes we had for it were some of the absolute best – and it’s all due to the acting.

I also adored when we got to see characters from The Originals and The Vampire Diaries show up – I always wondered why they said no to coming back. But that’s also none of my business. I’m happy getting what we got.
Legacies isn’t the only show I would love a chance to go back in time and fix. Guess which one this is.
What Storylines Would I Follow?
If I were given a chance to go back in time and rewrite the show with the cast and budget they already had, I already have ideas of what they could have done. In fact, I’ve thought about this a lot and am working on a four-book fanfiction series (give me time; I’m busy with work, school, and writing).

For the first season, I definitely would go with the Malivore storyline – in fact, I wouldn’t have been opposed to pushing that to maybe the first third of season two. But no more than one and a half seasons, maximum. I think that would be enough to get the point across – and we’d get to see Tribrid Hope much sooner like we all wanted.
While I’m on the topic of Hope’s tribrid storyline, I would love to expand her no-humanity storyline for all of season two directly following the killing of Malivore. I loved that arc, and it makes the most sense. It could also have little foreshadowing in the background of what the aftermath of Malivore’s death could mean for the world.

Moving on to season three, after Hope turns her humanity back on, I think playing with the gods storyline would be fun. That said, I wouldn’t rush it like the show did. A whole season of dealing with gods and other supernatural creatures that were released when Malivore died would be such a fun season.
And lastly, since the show ended with four, so will I. I’d pull directly from the original books and bring in the Kitsune since that was one of my favorite storylines. It was so mind-bending at times, and I think it would have been stunning to see onscreen. I genuinely believe it would have come full circle, tying it directly back to the books.
