How I Would Adapt ‘The Inheritance Games’

Before I read The Inheritance Games, I hadn’t found many YA or adult mystery series that stumped me. So, when I say I love The Inheritance Games, I mean it’s one of my favorite non-fantasy series. When I decided to start my blog, I knew I had to talk about a dream cast for it. And with Amazon adapting it, I thought now is the perfect time.

How Would I Do It?

Much like Amazon, I would make the trilogy a television series. That said, I’m pretty sure that’s where the similarities are likely to end.

I would make each book a season of about 20 episodes each, with each episode 30 minutes.

I’d also make a miniseries spin-off of The Brothers Hawthorne in the same format.

Another spin-off series would also be on my priority list since I’m sure it’s going to be a hit. That series will start with The Grandest Game, and once I’ve read the first book later this year, I’ll make a dream cast for those characters.

Who Would I Cast?

First and foremost, while I would love to see all unknown actors as the main characters – the Hawthorne siblings, Avery, and Libbymy dream cast is of people I’ve seen on-screen before (and you’ve probably also seen them, too).

Up first, let’s cast Avery Grambs. I couldn’t find many concrete details on her ethnicity – so I went searching for the basics we know about her, as well as finding an actress I know could handle the mystery genre well. The two actresses I’ve chosen are Malina Weissman (of A Series of Unfortunate Events) and Yael Shelbia (of Israel’s Rising).

Before I get into the Hawthornes, I want to cast Libby since my choices are based on who production would hypothetically choose for Avery. If Malina is chosen, Haley Lu Richardson is my choice for her older sister. And if Yael is chosen, my choice for Libby is Claudia Salas.

I’m going to make you wait for the two Hawthorne siblings I bet you’re waiting to read about, so let’s cast Nash first. For him, I wanted someone who could pull off cowboy well without making it seem cliche. And that’s how I landed on Dacre Montgomery or Austin Stowell.

For Xander, I knew my criteria would be darker-skinned than his brothers and had curly hair, but that’s where the physical criteria ended. That’s why I decided to dream cast Drew Davis as the youngest Hawthorne brother.

Let’s get into Grayson since he was pretty easy to cast. Maybe it’s because I read the books and then watched Fate: The Winx Saga, but I think Danny Griffin would be perfect as this Hawthorne brother.

For the last Hawthorne brother, I couldn’t narrow it down to less than three actors – and all because they’ve all played characters that give off Jameson energy. First up, I knew Benjamin Wadsworth would be perfect after Deadly Class. Next, we have Ginny and Georgia’s Felix Mallard. And lastly, my favorite Gilbert Blythe (from Anne with an E), Lucas Zumann. Regardless of who a hypothetical production would choose, I’d be happy with any of these actors as Jameson.

Lastly, I wanted to cast Tobias. I know he doesn’t really show up in the book series, but I’d love little flashbacks of him with younger versions of his grandsons. And if that’s too much to ask for, voiceovers of his voice as they read his letters and clues would be amazing, too.

For Tobias, I’d go with either Donald Sutherland (President Snow in The Hunger Games) or Christopher Plummer (Knives Out). Both have played characters that are a bit sneaky, so I think they’d do well as Tobias in either way I’ve laid out above.

As for the house, while I can’t exactly cast a house, I can say the mansion in Knives Out is the exact house I imagined while reading.

Who would you cast in the Amazon adaptation if you were given control? Keep an eye out for my Grandest Game casting in the next year.

I’m Kait

Welcome to my blog, Kait Mae. I created the blog in college as an assignment, then rebooted it when I worked for a newspaper as a creative outlet for articles that wouldn’t get published or some that I loved after I left that job. But after nearly two years, I’m rebooting it again as a creative outlet where I can share my thoughts on pop culture and media.

I hope you’ll stay awhile and check it out.
