This past week, on January 22, many people gathered to rally on the 45th Anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court in 1973.
For those who don’t know what the Roe v. Wade decision was, here’s the highlights of the trial:
- “Jane Roe” was pregnant who sought an abortion.
- Texas law prohibited abortions unless to save the mother’s life.
- The Supreme Court ruled that a woman had the right to an abortion under the Fourteenth amendment (the ruling was 7-2).
- The Fourteenth amendment protects the right of privacy.
- The ruling affected laws in 46 states.
Personally, I am pro choice. I wouldn’t get an abortion unless it was a last resort, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to tell a woman she can’t have an abortion. It’s her body, it’s her life. I don’t believe that anyone should control others, especially without knowing a person’s circumstances.
The reason I am writing this blog post is because people were holding up signs at the rally with the words “Defund Planned Parenthood”.
Planned Parenthood isn’t just for abortions. They offer birth control, HIV tests, support for people who have had abortions, and even general healthcare. We should not be saying defund planned parenthood especially with all that the do.
Just because you disagree with one philosophy doesn’t mean you disagree with all of them.
Planned Parenthood does so much good and we should support them with all the backlash they are constantly receiving.
